Bangladesh's BRAC (Bangladesh Rural Advancement Committee)
The civil society that made a name here was what became one of the world's largest NGOs-Bangladesh Rural Advancement Committee (BRAC).
BRAC was founded in 1972 by Fazle Hasan Abed after the Bangladesh Liberation War; it was set up as a relief organization assisting and resettling returning refugees from India.
In nine months, BRAC rebuilt 14,000 homes and several hundred boats for fishermen.
At the end of 1972, BRAC turned toward long-term development needs.
